What you don’t want on pizza night: a severe, unexpected allergic reaction. If you have a food allergy and you’ve bought DiGiorno frozen pizzas recently, you might want to check your freezer: Nestle is recalling 27,872 pounds of DiGiorno Crispy Pan Crust Pepperoni Pizzas due to a labelling mix-up that incorrectly lists the ingredients, leaving off a mention of soy.

The recall is due to “misbranding and undeclared allergens”

According to the USDA, a consumer complaint revealed the pizza maker mixed up their boxes, and that some packages intended for the company’s pepperoni pizza product might actually contain a different, three-meat version of their pizza. Problem is, the three-meat pizza’s beef and sausage toppings contain a soy protein that’s a known allergen.

“People who are allergic to soy could have an allergic reaction and should not consume the product. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the recall notice reads. (That said, if you already know you’re not allergic to soy, you’re fine.) So far, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to someone eating these mislabeled pizzas.

How to know if you’ve got one of the recalled pizzas

The affected product comes in a 26-oz. carton containing “DiGiorno Crispy Pan Crust Pepperoni Pizza” with a lot code 1181510721, a manufacturing date of June 30, 2021, and a “Best Buy” date of March 2022. The boxes also have the establishment number “EST. 1682A.” You can see what the labels look like here. Pepperoni pizza packages that have different production dates are apparently not impacted by the recall.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service urges consumers with concerns about allergic reactions to contact their healthcare provider. And if you ever need to report a potential problem with a meat, poultry, or egg product, the online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System can be accessed here.
