If your weekend plans involve a leisurely at-home brunch with plenty of smoked and/or pickled fish products, you’re going to want to check their labels, and may need to come up with a back-up menu. That’s because more than 80 different fish products have been recalled over concerns of potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Here’s what to know about the recall, and what to do if you’ve purchased any of the fish in question.
What’s included in the recall
A total of 84 fish products are part of a voluntary recall issued by their manufacturer, Banner Smoked Fish, Inc. of Brooklyn, NY, including smoked fish, pickled fish, fish in cream sauce, and fish salads. The items were sold online and in retailers located in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Pennsylvania, California, Florida, Nebraska, Arizona, Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, Nevada, Oregon, Wisconsin, Michigan, Washington, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
So what’s the reason for the recall? During a routine FDA inspection, it was discovered that the fish products were being processed under unsanitary conditions—specifically, ones that could result in the foods being contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes.
As of yesterday, there were no reports of illnesses related to eating any of the fish included in the recall, but you don’t want to be the first: Listeria is no joke—especially for young children, older adults, and anyone with a compromised immune system. It’s no picnic for everyone else, either, causing short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, the FDA reports.
The fish products come in various sizes in both air pack and vacuum packages, and are sold under several brand names, including Banner, Marshall’s Best, Supreme Fine Fish Products, Ben Z’s, BINGO, Westside Market NYC, New York Steelhead, and Golden Taste. What to do if you’ve purchased the recalled products
This time, it’s not a matter of determining if you have items from a particular shipment or lot: Banner is recalling all of their products that have not yet reached their expiration date (which can be found on the back of the package).
